An interesting surface to study

I really love this piece of rock that is in my garden, I believe it is Lewisian Gneiss - metamorphic and one of the most ancient rocks in the world. Having always had a fascination for geology I seem to be incapable of venturing out for a walk without stopping to pick up an interesting looking stone or pebble and am always attracted by rock strata, often stopping at the side of the road to take photographs of wonderful twisted layers and colours.

Being in the garden also has the advantage that if the weather is awful all I have to do is briefly nip outside.

The texture is quite rough and there are a variety of colours, layers and shapes, there are some cracks and loose dust and gravel where weathering has occurred and there is both lichen and thrift growing on it. There are both dark tones in the nooks and crannies and light areas where the sun catches the surface. I think with all of this it will give me enough scope for the forthcoming exercises.

Showing the rocky outcrop in my garden.

A view from a slight angle looking up the slope of the rock. I like the swirls and cracks.

A closer up photograph showing the cracking of part of the main stone, a little dust, debris, gravel, lichen and vegetation.
